The air appears in Thomas Ford's Musicke of Sundrie Kindes (1607) and The Golden Garland of Princely Delight (1620). Kines (1964) remarks almost nothing is known of the life of Thomas Ford, but "the beauty of this superb love song sets him in the highest rank of Elizabethan composers."
