The tune was entered into vol. 1 (No. 77) of the c. 1864-73 music manuscript collection of County Mayo farmer and fiddler Philip Carolan (c. 1839-1910), albeit under the title "Captain Reeler's Reel." 'Sir Charles Sedley' was presumably one of the English baronets of South Fleet, whose title went extinct with Sir Charles Sedley, 2nd Baronet (c. 1721-1778), a British politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1747 and 1778. He died in the latter year, unmarried.
