SLIM GAL. American, Reel and Song (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCD. Ira Ford's Traditional Music in America is a compendium of pop tunes, old and new songs, reels and breakdowns, a few jigs, and some ballroom music, purportedly collected in Missouri although Ford seldom mentions his sources. "Slim Gal" however, is a fairly accurate transcription of the 1928 recording by fiddler Clayton McMichen and guitarist and singer Riley Puckett, which is unusual for Ford's volume. The high parts of the transcription are McMichen's fiddle parts, while the low parts are the vocal line Puckett sang. The words to the comic song are by and large floating verses, found in "Whoa Mule Whoa" and other songs, generally detailing the preposterous features of the 'slim gal'.
