SOUTH MISSOURI. American, Reel (2/4 time). USA, Missouri. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Silberberg): AABB. “South Missouri” is one of ‘100 essential Missouri tunes’ listed by Missouri fiddler Charlie Walden, who had the tune from left-handed Andrew County, north-west Missouri, fiddler Cyril Stinnett (1912-1986), although it was not in the latter's recorded works. In 1966 Stinnett won the National Old-Time Fiddler's Contest at Weiser, Idaho, unseating the previous year's champion, Byron Berline. He was well-regarded for his precise playing and extensive repertoire, but he could also be moody and taciturn.
