"Spence's Tent" was composed by Tyneside publican, fiddler and composer wikipedia:James Hill (folk musician) (c. 1811-1853). The title refers to a Newcastle publican named Spence who had an establishment on the Newcastle Quayside. An enterprising merchant, he would also do business from a tent set up at the track on racing days.
