John Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of the tune in print in Angus Cumming's 1780 collection (p. 10). The alternate title printed in Cumming's volume, "“Sanriar abhog a Fiannach," may be a corrupted rendering of the Scots Gaelic s'ann riarachadh a Fiannach (in the serving of the warrior Fiannach)[1].
