SQUIRE WOOD'S LAMENTATION ON THE REFUSAL OF HIS HALFPENCE. AKA and see "Soor Plooms," "Soor Plooms of Galashiels," or "Sour Plums of Galashiels" (Scot.), “Wood's Lamentation.” Irish, Slow Air (4/4 time), Long or Set Dance (cut time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Complete Collection, Stanford/Petrie): AABB (Mulvihill, O’Neill). The composition of "(Squire) Wood's Lamentation" has been credited to blind Irish harper wikipedia:Turlough_O'Carolan (1670-1738), although Robin Williamson notes that the attribution was not made prior to the Victorian collector George Petrie (1855, Ancient Music of Ireland). He speculates "O'Carolan wrote, to an existing tune, a song in which he satirized the scandal of 1722 involving the minting of excessive amounts of copper money by the aforementioned William Wood, a conniving copper mine owner" (Williamson).
