SAINT CLAIR'S MARCH. American, March (whole time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "St. Clair's March" was printed by Boston music publisher Elias Howe in the mid-19th century. The title probably refers to Scottish-American General wikipedia:Arthur_St._Clair (1737-1818), who served (in the British Army) in the French and Indian Wars, the American War of Independence (with the Continental Army), and in the Indian wars of the 1790's. He was commander of the American forces at their worst defeat ever at the hands of Native American warriors, abetted by the British, at the Battle of the Wabash in 1791 in what is now Ohio (then the Northwest Territory). He was exonerated afterwards, but resigned his army commission at the request of George Washington, although he continued to serve as governor of the region. He was removed from the latter position by President Thomas Jefferson in 1802 for un-politic statements.
