ST. KEVIN. Irish, Jig (6/8 time). B Flat Major (Kerr): D Major (Miller). Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Kerr): AA’BB (Miller). St. Kevin (493-613) was an Irish saint, a contemporary and acquaintance of St. Columba. He was both a hermit and an abbot, off and on, and was known as a patient man and a friend to animals. One legend has it that the aged King O’Tool of Glendalough, a pagan, made a pet of a goose. The beloved animal became aged and weak, and the king, knowing of Kevin’s holiness and affinity for animals, sent for the holy man. O’Tool demanded that Kevin make the goose young again, which request Kevin said he would grant if he would be rewarded with a gift of any land the goose would fly over. The king, knowing the bird was flightless in its infirmity, readily agreed. Kevin then touched the bird and indeed the years sloughed off. Now able to take flight, the goose flew over the valley of Glendalough in which Kevin founded the monastery of Glendalough.
