STAR OF THE EAST. AKA and see "Freddy Kimmel's," "Julia Clifford's Hornpipe," "Second Star Hornpipe," “The Star,” "Star Hornpipe (3) (The)." Irish, American; Hornpipe. B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Can be used as a Clog,” notes Ryan. "Star of the East" is the name for the tune in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883), likely obtained from the archives of Elias Howe (for whom William Bradbury Ryan was employed) who had earlier published it as "Star Hornpipe (3) (The)" in his 1000 Jigs and Reels (c. 1867). Under the name "Second Star Hornpipe" it was published by W.B. Laybourn in his Kohler's Violin Repository, Book 2 (c. 1883) and attributed to one 'G. Tate', about whom nothing is known.

A hornpipe called "Freddy Kimmel's" (AKA "Julia Clifford's Hornpipe") was recorded by John and Julia Clifford on their LP "The Humours of Lisheen" (Topic 12TS311, 1977) that is quite similar to "Second Star Hornpipe," with the addition of a third part. The title "Freddy Kimmel's" comes from Billy Clifford who recalled that was the name his father used, but no such individual is known. It may be a mishearing/misremembering of Brooklyn accordion player John J. Kimmel, a prolific early 78 RPM recording artist.
