John Baltzell (1860-1940)
STARLIGHT WALTZ [1]. American, Waltz (3/4 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. "Starlight Waltz [1]" was one of 26 sides[1] recorded for Edison Records between 1923 and 1928 by Knox County, Ohio, fiddler John Baltzell (1860-1940). He was born in a log cabin, learned to fiddle as a child and played dances when he was young (and continued to do so when he could when he was older). He worked for the railroad as a boilermaker, for many years. In 1922 he won the Ohio fiddle championship, coming to the attention of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. The former offered him the opportunity to make records, and he participated at Ford dealership-sponsored fiddle contests of the 1920's.

  1. Baltzell recorded over 40 sides for Edison, but a number were not released. Still, at 26 released sides, he was one of the most prolific of the early fiddlers on record.
