STEEL HOOP, THE. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA’BB’. The title may refer to an apparatus for acrobatic entertainment. The melody first appears in Charles and Samuel Thompson’s first annual country dance collection (London, 1753), followed by a printing in John Johnson’s 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 8 (London, 1758). The Thompson’s published it again in their Complete Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 3 (London, 1773).
