STRAW HAT, THE. Irish, Air or Jig (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Fr. John Quinn finds O'Neill's "Staw Hat" to be a nearly exact copy of an untitled jig collected by wikipedia:George_Petrie_(artist) (1790-1866). The title was presumably supplied by O'Neill, and Fr. Quinn points out that O'Neill did not give Petrie credit as source for the tune, nor did he include Petrie's bowing, phrasing and other musical markups. The tune is one Petrie collected himself, although he gives no indication of where he obtained it nor from whom.
