SWEENEY’S WHEEL. Irish, Reel (whole time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDDEEFFGG. Paul de Grae identifies this tune as a composition of County Cork accordion player Jackie Daly, composed for a ‘character’ named Sweeney who resides in Gort, County Galway. A man of eccentric pursuits, one of Sweeney’s interests is trying to design a perpetual motion machine, which Daly’s reflects in his tune by having the melody go round and round without ever coming to an end (on the album it simply fades out).
