SWEET KATE. English, Country Dance Tune (6/4 and 6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABB. There are modal elements in the tonality of the second strain. The melody, with directions for a country dance, was first published in John Playford's Dancing Master, fourth edition (1670, p. 94). It was retained in all subsequent editions of the long-running Dancing Master series of editions through the 18th and final one of 1728. It was also published by rival London music publisher John Walsh in his Compleat Country Dancing Master, editions of 1718, 1731 and 1754, and in his Compleat Country Dancing Master, Volume the Fourth (1740, No. 68). Robert Jones wrote a love song in 1609 called "Sweet Kate," but it is in duple time, and a different melody.
