SWORD IN (THE) HAND, THE (An Claíomh i Láimh). AKA and see “Round/Around the World for Sport (2),” “Cork Lasses (2) (The),” “Conlon's Dream,” “Conolon's Dream,” "Little Pig Lamenting the Empty Trough (The)," "Sally on the Shore," "Union is Welcome to Ireland (The)." Irish, Reel. E Dorian (Alewine): E Minor (Breathnach). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB (Breathnach): AA'BB' (Alewine). A reel with several variants that has also attracted several titles. Brendan Breathnach's source Brogan also called the tune “The Little Pig Lamenting the Empty Trough.” “The Cork Lasses” title is from the Goodman Manuscript in the Library of Trinity College, Dublin. However, Goodman entered a fragment (the opening several bars) of a cognate tune under the title "Union is Welcome to Ireland (The)," in a section of pipe tunes[1]. Bulmer & Sharpley print it under the title “Conolon's Dream,” from Belfast fiddler Sean McGuire. “The Kerry Reel [3]," from Breathnach’s Ceol Rince na hÉireann IV (No. 112) is a version of “The Sword in Hand.” A version of the reel can be found in Book 1 (p. 42) of the mid-19th century music manuscript collection of Canon wikipedia:James_Goodman_(musician) (1828-1896) under the title "Union is Welcome to Ireland (The)." See also the related “Rambler in Cork.” Finally, “The Breast Knots” shows similarities with this tune.
