TAMNAVUILN (Tòrn na mhuilin). AKA and see "Lord John Murray's Reel (2)," "Walking of the Plaiding (The)." Scottish, Reel (cut time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The reel "Tamnavuiln" appears in the Drummond Castle Manuscript, Part 2 (in the possession of the Earl of Ancaster at Drummond Castle), 1734, inscribed "A Collection of the best Highland Reels written by David Young, W.M. & Accomptant." The first part of the manuscript contains country dances, while the second has reels and strathspeys. "Tamnavuiln" is a form of tòrn na mhuilin and means 'Mill on the Hill'.
The reel can also be found in Young's MacFarlane Manuscript Book II (c. 1741, No. 202, p. 240) as "Tòrn na mhuiln." The Gows printed Young's tune under the title "Walking of the Plaiding (The)," published in Niel Gow's First Collection (1784). A version of the reel was entered into the music copybook of amateur musician John Grant (n.d., p. 32) under the title "Lord John Murray's Reel (2)."
