TARTAN PLAID [2], THE. AKA and see "Wild Salamanca", "Salamanca {Reel} [1]," "The Maigue's Tide," "Coronation Reel." Irish, Reel (4/4 time). D Major ('A' part) & E Dorian ('B' part). Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Co-composership of the tune was credited to North Kerry fiddler Paddy Bawn O’Sullivan by himself, however, is is considerably older than that gentleman. County Cork cleric and uilleann piper James Goodman included "Tartan Plaid [2]" in vol. 1 (p. 220) of his large mid-19th century music manuscript collection. Goodman researchers Hugh and Lisa Shields find the tune a derivative of Edinburgh bandleader and fiddler-composer Nathaniel Gow's "Miss Maule of Panmure."
A version of this tune appears as an untitled reel in Brendan Breathnach’s Ceol Rince na hÉirreann, vol. V (1999, No. 204, p. 97), obtained from a Radio Éireann recording of Glin, County Limerick, fiddler Mrs. Long.
