TARTAR, THE. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody was first published in John Hinton’s Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure (London, 2:340, 1757). It was picked up by publisher J. Johnson for his 'Two Hundred Favourite Country Dances, vol. 8 (London, 1758, p. 100). While the title 'Tarter' could reflect many things, there have been several Royal Navy ships called HMS Tartar, and perhaps there is a connection.
