USA; Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine. G Major (most versions): C Major (Howe/Accordeon). Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The tune "Tempest (1)" is centuries old, under the Welsh title "Ap Shenkin." It is linked with a country dance called The Tempest in New England (hence the tune acquiring the dance title through association), perhaps the one performed at the 150th anniversary celebration of the town of Lancaster, New Hampshire, in August, 1914 (according to a playbill of the time). Howe (c. 1867) printed dance instructions with the tune, which was included in his section of Contra Dances. The title also appears in a list of the repertoire of Maine fiddler Mellie Dunham. The elderly Dunham was Henry Ford's champion fiddler in the late 1920's.
