TEMPEST [2], THE. AKA - "Wiltshire Tempest." AKA and see "Tempête (1) (La)." English, Country Dance Tune and Polka. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABCD. The melody was first printed as "Tempête (1) (La)" (The Storm) in Glasgow publisher James Aird's Selection of Scotch, English, Irish and Foreign Airs, and was a French country dance that became popular. A version of the melody called "Tempest" was collected in Wiltshire in 1928 from an informant named Irene Usher of Sneed. "The dance was taught to the village people about 30 years ago by a former vicar's wife. She is said to have brought it from Devonshire. The dance was performed for my benefit on April 24th [1928], the tune being played on the piano from the MS. copy." Usher's original tune is a simplified version that is quite distanced from later polka versions, and is more similar to Aird's printing.
