THADELO'S BARN DANCE [1].   AKA - "Thadelo's Hornpipe," "Thadelo's No. 3." Irish; Barndance, Hornpipe (2/4 or whole time). Ireland, Sliabh Luachra, County Kerry. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Sliabh Luachra accordion player Johnny O'Leary paired this barndance with a version of "Turkey in the Straw." According to researcher Brendan Breathnach[1], his melody "Polca Chrosaire an Leacaigh/Lackagh Cross (3)" is related to "Thadelo's Barn Dance [1]" (O'Leary, No. 246)[2]. Breathnach had his polka from Art O'Keeffe, who played it for the collector on one of his visits to Sliabh Luachra. Breathnach also noted that "Peter Murphy used to play it".

  1. Note to tune No. 103 in CRÉ V. See "Translations of Breathnach's CRE endnotes into English, with annotations, by Paul de Grae" [2].
  2. The relationship, obscure to some, becomes more clear if one transposes "Lackagh Cross (3)" to the key of 'D'.
