THATCHER’S MALLET, THE (Máilléad an tuíodóra). Irish, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Composed by flute player and piper Peter/Peadar Broderick, originally from Bullen, north of Loughrea, County Galway, an older brother of flute player and composer Vincent Broderick. Charlie Piggott, in his book Blooming Meadows (1998) written with Fintan Vallely, relates that in 1954 Peter became (to Piggott’s knowledge) the only person to win the All-Ireland fleadh cheoil flute title playing a self-composed tune on a self-made instrument, a home-made copper flute.
