THREE FORKS OF/IN THE KENTUCKY RIVER. American, Reel. USA, southwest Virginia. The instrumental "Three Forks of the Kentucky River" was the repertoire of Fiddlin' Cowan Powers 1877-1952? (Russell County, southwest Va.) and recorded by him and his family band for Victor in August of 1924 (Matrix #B-30580), although the side was apparently unissued.
The main branch of the Kentucky River, which forms in the Cumberland Mountains of east Kentucky, is created by the confluence of the North Fork and South Fork tributaries in Lee County, while the Middle Fork joins the North Fork nearby. The North Fork itself rises in eastern Letcher County near the Virginia state line in Payne Gap, on the northwest side of Pine Mountain.
