TOWN OF GALWAY. Irish, Waltz (3/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. The waltz was composed by Joe Derrane and Tommy Shields. Around the time an instrumental version of the melody was published in O'Brien's Irish Folk Dance Music (1952), the song version (also called "The Town of Galway" ) sung by Connie Foley was issued on the Copely label (Copely 149-125, 45 RPM). Foley recorded a number of sides with the Joe Derrane Trio in the early 1950's. One stanza begins:
I left my old sweetheart one morning in May,
And twas just as the liner was leaving he quay;
When I held her closely and I heard her say,
You'll remember me dear and the Town of Galway.
