TURF HOUSE REEL. Irish, Reel (whole time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The tune was composed by Patrick Street member Ged Foley. There is some similarity to “Mayo Lasses (The)” (Breathnach, CRE 1, 80) and “Old Maids of Galway (1) (The)” (O’Neill, DMI 654). Kerry fiddlers Denis Murphy and Julia Clifford recorded another similar tune, "Johnny When You Die (1)]. Cape Breton fiddlers play another similar tune, "West Mabou Reel,” sometimes attributed to Dan Beaton {Domhnull Iain an Táillear} (1856-1919), although it is probably Irish in origin. See note for “annotation:Johnny When You Die (1)."
