TWERE VAIN TO TELL THEE ALL I FEEL. American, Air and Waltz (3/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB. The sheet music for the song[1], by A. Charles Thibault and published in New York in 1832, describes it as a "Swiss Air." Thibault, born in France, settled in United States and composed and taught the piano from 1818 and until his death in 1853. The air was entered in the mid-19th century music manuscript of William Winter[2], a shoemaker and violin player who lived in West Bagborough in Somerset. The first stanza of the song goes:
Twer vain to tell thee all I feel,
Or say for thee I'd die,
Or say for thee I'd die;
I find that words will but conceal
What my soul would wish to sigh.
