UNION [4], THE. English, Country Dance Tune (3/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The tune was published in all four editions of John Young's Second Volume of the Dancing Master (1710-1728), and in rival publishers Walsh and Hare's Second Book of the Compleat Country Dancing-Master (1719).

The tune's title probably refers to the Treaty of Union [1] (1706), uniting the Kingdoms of England and Scotland and enacted separately by the Parliaments of England (ratified in 1706) and Scotland (in 1707). Thereafter Britain was ruled by one Parliament, in London, in what one historian has called "one of the most astonishing transformations in European history."
