X:1 T:Wandering Sailor, The M:C L:1/8 R:Air S:The Buttery Manuscript (c. 1784-1820, No. 750) N:John Buttery (1784-1854) joined the 34th Regiment in Lincoln, N:Lincolnshire, England, in 1797 and served as a fifer until discharged in N:1814. His large ms. contains marches, duty calls, dance tunes and airs. WANDERING SAILOR, THE. English, Air. "The Wandering Sailor" is a song composed by Samuel Arnold (1740-1802) for the comic opera Summer Amusement or and Adventure at Margate (1779). It was published in song collections such as Calliope, or the Musical Miscellany (1788, pp. 448-450) and David Sime's The Edinburgh Musical Miscellany (1792, pp. 38-40) and is occasionally found in period musicians' manuscript copybooks.
