WELCOME FROM HANOVER. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody first appeared in print in John Johnson’s Choice Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 6 (London, 1751). The title is associated with Hanover, Germany, the ancestral home of the kings of England beginning with George I (George Ludwig, ruler of the Duchy and Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg, Hanover), who was invited to take the throne after the death of Queen Anne (being the closed non-Catholic in the royal bloodline). At the time of Johnson’s publication his son George II was on the throne, but the ties were still strong between the German duchy and England.
