WINNIPEG REEL [1]. AKA and see "Atlantic Polka (4)." Canadian, Reel. Canada, western Canada. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Winnipeg Reel" was composed by Woodridge, Manitoba, fiddler wikipedia:Andy_de_Jarlis (1914-1975), who named a number of his tunes for Manitoba places. The tune appears in Canadian radio and TV fiddler Don Messer's [1] (1909-1973) 1948 tune collection as the fourth change of the Atlantic Polka set. A reel by this title was later popularized by Montreal fiddler Jean Carignan. However, Carignan's recording that was listed as the Winnipeg Reel on his 1960 album "Old Time Fiddle Tunes played by Jean Carignan" actually consisted of two tunes, neither of which is the DeJarlis Winnipeg Reel (see "Winnipeg Reel (2)" for Carignan's tune). These tunes sound like they are Southern Appalachian tunes with the second one possibly a version of "Leather Breeches".
The tune appears in Messer’s 1948 publication as the fourth change of the Atlantic Polka set.
