WIVES OF TORPHICHAN, THE. AKA - "Wives of Torphican." AKA and see "Dance (The)." English, Scottish; Jig (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. John Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of this tune in print in Robert Bremner's 1757 collection, however, it clearly was printed earlier by two London publishers; John Johnson in his Choice Collection of (1748), and David Rutherford in his Rutherford's Compleat Collection of 200 of the Most Celebrated Country Dances (1756). The jig was also entered into Northumbrian musician William Vickers 1770 manuscript collection under the title "Dance (The)."

Torphichen is the name of a small village in East Lothian, Scotland, near Linlithgow. There have also been Lords Torphichen since 1564 (created by Queen Mary) to the present, all members of the Sandilands family. Needless to say, the title refers to the wives of the village, not one of the Lords.
