WOLF IN THE FERNS. In the repertoire of Champion, central New York State fiddler Winifred “Murph” Baker (1911-1986). Baker was born in Carthage, N.Y., into a musical family--his father played mouth organ and his mother played piano and organ, while an uncle, Franklin Wood, played the fiddle. Baker picked up the fiddle at the age if 11 and was largely self-taught.
