YELLOW FLAIL [2], THE (An Súiste Buidhe). Irish, Air (6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. P.W. Joyce (1890) remarks that he knew this air from his childhood in Limerick in the 1840's, “and always by the name of the ‘Súiste buidhe,’ or ‘The yellow flail’. A second, musically unrelated, air of the same name was also collected by him (for which see "Yellow Flail (1) (The)"). Boston publisher Elias Howe is supposed to have printed the same melody some six years before Joyce published his Ancient Music of Ireland (1873), but Howe's publication dates are approximate, and the tune's provenance is clearly Irish. Since the music is identical in both publications, it can be assumed Howe was copying Joyce.
