Biographical notes
PATRICK McGAHON was a musician and Irish language teacher with the Irish Society in the early 19th century who lived Dungooley, County Louth, on the Armagh border. Little else is known about him. His music manuscript collection is dated 1817, and also contains some tunes in other hands; the names "Rober Balmer, Longfield" and "Bernard Burns, Tullydonnald" are written on a few of the sheets of the collection and may have been contributors. Many of the pieces in the collection are Scottish and English, but there are also compositions by Carolan and several with the name Jackson (referring to composer Walker "Piper" Jackson). There is a preponderance of 6/8 time tunes.
