DUKE OF LEINSTER'S WIFE, THE. AKA and see "Blue Pantaloons (2) (The)," "Ladies' Pantalettes (1) (The)," "Lady's Pantalettes (The)," "Gardiner's Favorite." Irish, Reel. The tune is often played after "The Duke of Leinster," and the title "Duke of Leinster's Wife" came about through this association, to emphasize the pairing and because use of the real title, "Ladies' Pantalettes (1) (The)," was considered risque in some circles. The duke's wife, however, was a real personage with an interesting story-see note for "Annotation:Duke of Leinster (1) (The)." The tune was obtained by Irish collector George Petrie from Frank Keane on March, 10, 1856, apparently without a title, for Petrie entered it into his book as "County of Clare Reel." It was recorded by County Sligo/New York fiddler Michael Coleman [1] in May, 1927, in a duet with County Longford fiddler Packie Dolan (1904-32) as "The Duke of Leinster and His Wife," their pairing of "Duke of Leinster" and "Ladies Pantalettes".
