Gas lights in London were first publicly lit in Pall Mall, on January 28th, 1807, although it took some time for the rest of the city to be fitted with the fixtures. By 1823 most of the cities in Britain had gas lighting.
As "Cambrian Lyrist (The)" the tune can be found in a few musicians' manuscript collections of the 19th century. It was entered into the Winder Family mss. (Lake District), William Winter (Somerset, 1850) and an anonymous ms. from Staffordshire. See note for "annotation:Cambrian Lyrist (The)" for more.
