STRANGER ON A MULE. American, Reel (cut time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. "Stranger on a Mule" comes from the repertoire of fiddler Elzie Estes (Warren County, south-central Kentucky), recorded in the field in 1973 by Bruce Greene. The story goes that young Estes and a friend who were both trying to learn to play the fiddle were out tending crops in the fields when they heard the tune being whistled by a passerby riding a mule, and followed him long enough to memorize the tune.
