WIDOW OF WAREHAM, THE. AKA and see "Winton's Frolick." English, Country Dance Tune (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Widow of Wareham" first appeared (with directions for a country dance) in John Hinton's periodical The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure (August, 1760). Ten years later it was entered into the large 1770 music manuscript collection of Northumbrian musician William Vickers, albeit under the title "Winton's Frolick." The tune was also printed as No. 10 in "Voices of the Peoples in Songs, third collection: English, Scottish and Irish Volksmelodien" (op. 55) by Johann Karl Eschmann (1826–1882).
