OLD BLUE SOW. American, Reel (cut time). USA; Arkansas, Mississippi. A Major & D Major. Standard or ADae (Bruce Molsky) tunings (fiddle). Most modern versions are modeled after a 1939 recording by Magee, Simpson County, central Mississippi, fiddler Enos Canoy (1909-1970), who had learned the tune from an uncle, Robert Runnels, from Simpson County, Mississippi. Tom Rankin (1985) says of the tune: "This piece is less an identifiable melody than a patchwork of harmonic textures woven with a series of rhythmic bowing patterns." The title appears in a list of traditional Ozarks Mountain fiddle tunes compiled by musicologist/folklorist Vance Randolph, published in 1954.
