LAST OF JUNE. AKA and see "Bonnie Polka (Da)," "Bridal Polka (1)," "Down to the Quay," "Devlin's Polka," "Heel and Toe Polka (1)," "Jenny Lind (1)," "Murphy's Polka," "O'Keeffe's Polka (4)." Irish, English; Polka (cut time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Last of June" is one of a number of variants of "Jenny Lind (1)" AKA "Jenny Lind's Polka." The source for the tune is fiddle and melodeon player Rose Murphy (1900-1977), née Rose Anne Conlon, who was born in Belltown, near Milltown, County Galway, Ireland, to a musical family originally from County Mayo (her father played fiddle, flute, melodeon and warpipes, her mother played melodeon as was an accomplished stepdancer, a sister played fiddle and melodeon and brothers played flute, tinwhistle, warpipes and sang). Her brother, melodeon player P.J. Conlon, emigrated to America and became a 78 RPM recording artist, renowned in Irish dance music circles. Rose lived most of her adult life in Maltby, South Yorkshire and recorded one album at age 76 near the end of her life, issued on Topic Records.
