FIDDLING PHIL. AKA and see "Dubuque," "Duck River," "Five Miles from Town (2)," "General Lee," "Mabel," "Old Dubuque," "Phiddlin' Phil," "Sally in the Green Corn." Canadian, American; Reel or Breakdown. Canada, Prince Edward Island. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. A member of a popular North American tune family. Ken Perlman (1996) identifies Fiddling Phil as a well-known radio fiddler and suggests that Maritime Canadian radio fiddling great Don Messer coined the title. Whether Messer had anything to do with the title is not known; however, the tune under the title "Phiddlin' Phil" can be found in E.F. Adam's collection of 1928 called Old Time Fiddlers' Favorite Barn Dance Tunes, printed in St. Louis. Perlman states it is a widely played Kings County, PEI, dance tune.
