UPON A SUMMER’S DAY. AKA and see “Garland (1) (The),” “Gipsie's Round.” English, Country Dance Tune (6/4 or 6/8 time). D Dorian (Chappell, Raven): F Minor (Barnes, Sharp). Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Chappell, Raven): AABB (Sharp): AABBB (Barnes). The air (whose title comes from a ballad) was published by John Playford in his first edition of The English Dancing Master (1651) and was retained under the "Upon a Summer's Day" title through the third edition of 1657, after which it appears as "Summer's Day (A)." In later editions (1670 90) it is called “The Garland” after another ballad set to the tune. The air also appears in Playford's Musick’s Delight on the Cithren (1666). Playford's tune is based upon an older one: composer William Byrd set it as "Gipseis Round", and it is associated with Anne of Denmark under the title "Garland (1) (The)."
