SPLASH'D PETTICOAT. AKA - "Splash Petticoat." AKA and see "Thaugh Shay." English, Jig and Country Dance Tune (6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Splash'd Petticoat" is in a section of dances by 'Mr. Rose' in David Rutherford's Compleat Collection (1756). As "Smash Petticoat," the tune was entered into the American music manuscript collections of fifer Thomas Nixon (Conn., c. 1776, p. 51) and Ralph Pomeroy (Conn., 1790, p. 9). Researcher Conor Ward finds a cognate, nearly identical copy of the tune as "Thaugh Shay" in Boston music publisher Elias Howe's Musicians Omnibus Nos. 6 & 7 (1880-1882).
