TRUXTON'S VICTORY. American, Reel (2/4 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Truxton's Victory" was entered into the anonymous 1826-1858 music manuscript collection entitled Melodist: A Collection of music in two volumes (No. 7, p. 6), probably from the state of Maine. The title honors Captain Thomas Truxtun (1755-1822), who was born near Hempstead, Long Island, and who went to sea at age 12, joining the merchant marine. He made captain at age 20 and a few years later was engaged as a privateer by the Continental Congress. After the war he returned to the merchant marine. Truxton was one of the first six commanders appointed to the new US Navy by President Washington. During his naval career he commanded a number of famous U.S. naval ships, including USS Constellation and USS President. As captain of the Constellation he won a celebrated victory over L'Insurgente in 1799. Later he rose to the rank of Commodore, and in civilian life he became involved with politics and was also elected as a sheriff.
