PATTE DU MOUTON (Leg of Mutton). AKA - "Patte de Mouton," "Sheep Shanks," "Sheep Paw." AKA and see "Reel du pendu." French-Canadian, Reel (cut time). A Major. Standard or ADae tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. A version of "Reel du pendu" (Hanged Man's Reel), often heard in two-part versions in Quebec but sometimes with additional sections or variations attached. Researcher Jean Duval records that the title "Patte du mouton' is common for the 'Reel du pendu" in Gaspésie and Acadie, in both French and English. For example, he says, fiddler Romeo Hottot from Douglastown in the Gaspé (filmed by Glenn Patterson) calls "Sheep's Paw" a version of the "Hanged Man's Reel."

For another Québécois 'mutton' tune, see Aimé Gagnon's "Cotillon de la patte du mouton." See also “Paddy on the Turnpike (1).”
