BIRCHARD'S HORNPIPE. American; Reel or Hornpipe. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB'. A popular "old-time" tune composed in the 1970's by California fiddler Michael Springer, often mistaken as a traditional tune. The tune also has considerable currency among contra-dance musicians. It was named for Barbara Birchard, of Venice Beach, who traded acupressure and shiatsu massage treatments for fiddle lessons for her husband John. See also Mark Simos' tune written in honor of Springer, "Springer's Hope Eternal."
