BRANDLINGS. AKA and see "Colonel Rodney," "Dogs Among the Bushes (The)," "Fox (The)," "Miss Brandling of Gosforth's Reel." Scottish, Reel. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Athole, Cranford, Hunter): AABB (White): AA'BB' (Kerr). Composed by Abraham Mackintosh (b. 1769, son of 'Red Rob' MacKintosh) but appearing in John Watlen's 1798 2nd collection, inscribed: "The Celebrated Circus Tunes performed at Edinburgh this Season..." It first went by the title (and is still sometimes called) "Fox (The)," as it was printed in the 2nd edition of biography:Abraham Mackintosh's Collection (c. 1796), as "Miss Brandling of Gosforth's Reel," with the truncated "Brandling" title first appearing in the 1884 Athole Collection. In Ireland, versions of the tune are known under the titles "Colonel Rodney" and "Dogs Among the Bushes (The)."
