HIGHLAND LAMENT, THE. AKA and see "Downshire Reel (The)," "Reel (90)." Irish, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. A reel from the music manuscript collection of Abbeylara, Co. Longford, fiddler Larry Smyth, who compiled it around the year 1900. Researcher Conor Ward finds a similar version in another local music manuscript, that of Patrick O'Farrell of Aughadowry, Ballinamuck, Co. Longford, compiled in the 1870's, under the title "Highland Bonnet (The)." Both tunes, he finds, are cognate with "Bloom of Youth (The)" AKA "Dr. Taylor." Fr. John Quinn also finds an untitled reel (for which see "Reel (90)") in Book 2 of the large c. 1883 music manuscript collection of County Leitrim fiddler and piper biography:Stephen Grier (c. 1824-1894).
