LOCHAN A' CHAIT. Scottish, Reel. E Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'B. Composed by the editor of the Athole Collection, Biography:James Stewart-Robertson (1823-1896). He was born in Edradynate, Moulin Parish, Perthshire, where he learned to fiddle. He married Mary Jane Cunninghame, the daughter of Robert Cunninghame of Balanorris in 1852. In his lifetime he was known as a lawyer, philanthropist, and politician, and was a founding member of the Edinburgh Highland Reel and Strathspey Society (1881).

The Irish "Riley's Reel", collected in Country Fermanagh, is melodically and harmonically similar in the first strain, and harmonically similar in the second. However, it is not clear that it is cognate with Stewart-Robertson's composition, and the two may have developed independently.
